We need to get this right now, before we irreparably pollute portions of our aquifer via LOTT infiltration actions (note that they choose very porous areas for these activities, to save money, but this minimizes the ground's filtration effect).

I've learned to listen to the language used as a clue to the intent:

-- LOTT is now the LOTT Clean Water Alliance. Why add the words "clean water", which are inaccurate, other than to pacify the public?

-- The term Compounds of Emerging Concern is, as you pointed out, misleading. There have been concerns for a long time. We should say something like "chemical pollutants we've known about but ignored".

All of this plays to our natural desire to believe that everything is OK and we don't need to spend more money. But we need to face unpleasant realities.

Thanks again for your excellent reporting. It's a real community service.

BobJBob Jacobsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310124704019321251.post-42531231190554934172012-03-13T13:22:44.335-07:002012-03-13T13:22:44.335-07:00Thanks, Janine. Nice job, and nice to see you at the symposium.

One minor clarification, or amplification -- the irrigation will be 600,000 gallons per day! That will take a huge load off of our drinking water supply.

Tom Oliva
Tumwater City Councilmember
555 Israel Road SW
Tumwater, WA 98501
toliva@ci.tumwater.wa.usTom Olivanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310124704019321251.post-32056402174258886702012-03-09T16:33:09.423-08:002012-03-09T16:33:09.423-08:00Hi, Janine. I was going to go to this and then had to skip it at the last minute!

You do have one sentence in here that I think could use a rewrite... The scientists repeatedly described that the margin of exposure through drinking water as minimal, and, using the example of drugs, compared the exposure to the therapeutic dose actually prescribed by doctors and ingested directly.

The second half of this sounds to me as if they said that the amount we're getting in drinking water is about the same as a therapeutic dose, and I don't think they'd call that minimal. (I assume this means they said the amount was
miniscule in comparison to a therapeutic dose, but I don't think the phrasing's very clear...)

(Editor's Note: correct...my sentence was unclear. I wonder, since Mcallister Creek and other water sources for Thurston County are fed by artesian springs, these aquifers are under tremendous pressure at depth. The recharge areas are miles south of here. How could CECs enter this system? Seems to me the concern is Puget Sound which is more contaminated antidepressants than any other salt water body and fish are susceptible to these things.Harry Branchnoreply@blogger.com
